Life Together Is Worth the Effort
"To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me." — Colossians 1:29
Christian community is often appreciated in principle but tested in practice. Building meaningful relationships requires time, patience, and a willingness to remain present when life becomes complicated. Genuine fellowship develops as believers walk through ordinary days together, sharing both burdens and joy.
In Colossians 1:24–2:5, the Apostle Paul gives us a glimpse into that kind of commitment. His ministry was marked by hardship, yet he never questioned whether the work was worthwhile. Paul understood that investing in Christ's church would be costly, but he also knew it was an investment with eternal value.
His confidence was rooted in Christ Himself.
Paul viewed service to the church as service to Jesus because the church is Christ's body. There was no division between devotion to the Savior and commitment to His people. Every sacrifice became an act of worship, shaped by the conviction that Christ alone was worthy of complete obedience.
That perspective shaped the way Paul viewed people. His goal was never simply to communicate biblical truth or gather larger crowds. He longed to "present everyone fully mature in Christ." Spiritual maturity became the measure of success. Every conversation, every lesson, and every moment of encouragement pointed believers toward deeper faith in Jesus.
Paul also recognized that healthy churches do not happen accidentally. Hearts need encouragement. Faith must be strengthened. Believers need one another to recognize deception, remain grounded in the gospel, and continue growing together. Those things happen as ordinary Christians faithfully invest in one another over time.
None of that is effortless.
The church is made up of people who carry wounds, disappointments, and weaknesses. Misunderstandings happen. Patience is required. Grace must be practiced repeatedly. Those realities often tempt us to step back rather than remain engaged.
Paul's response is both challenging and hopeful. He reminds us that the strength to persevere is not something we manufacture ourselves. "To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me." His endurance flowed from Christ's power rather than personal resolve.
The same promise belongs to us today. Christ never calls His people to love others through sheer determination. He provides the strength to remain faithful when serving becomes difficult. He supplies what is needed to encourage a friend, teach a younger believer, or quietly continue showing up when community requires patience.
Life together does take effort. That effort is worthwhile because Christ is worthy, His people matter, and His church remains the place where God shapes us into the likeness of His Son.

Father, thank You for welcoming me into Your family through Jesus Christ. Shape my heart so that I value Your church the way You do. Give me the humility to serve faithfully, even when it requires patience or sacrifice. Strengthen me through Your Spirit so that I may encourage others and continue growing alongside them. May my life reflect the love of Christ as I invest in the people You have placed around me. In His name, amen.
