Remember Who You Are
“Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” (Romans 6:3–4)
There are moments in our lives that become markers. We remember where we were, who was there, and what happened. Years later, those memories can remind us of something we need to know again.
In Romans 6, Paul tells believers to look back at one of those moments: their baptism.
Remember.
Remember going into the water. Remember coming back up. Remember what that moment said about Jesus and about you.
Baptism gives us a physical picture of the gospel. Jesus died, was buried, and rose again. In baptism, we are joined to that story. We go beneath the water and come back up, a tangible reminder that our old life has died with Christ and we have been raised with Him to new life.
That matters because there will be days when the new life does not feel very new.
There will be days when old habits resurface. There will be seasons when faith feels weak or doubt creeps in. There will be moments when temptation feels stronger than we expected and we wonder whether anything in us has really changed.
In those moments, Paul gives us somewhere to look.
Look back.
Your identity is not determined by how strong your faith feels today. Your failures do not get to rewrite the story of what Christ has done for you. If you belong to Jesus, His story has become your story. His death means the old life no longer has the final word. His resurrection means there is new life for you now and the promise of resurrection still ahead.
This is part of the gift God gives us in baptism. Our faith is something we believe in our hearts, but God created us as people with bodies too. In baptism, the gospel becomes something we can experience. We feel the water. We go beneath it. We are raised from it. It becomes a memory we can carry with us.
Maybe you were baptized so long ago that you rarely think about it anymore. Take some time today to remember.
You have died with Christ.
You have been buried with Christ.
You have been raised with Christ.
You belong to Him.
And because you have been raised with Christ, you can walk with Him in new life today.
Reflect
What do you remember about your baptism? What does that moment remind you about what Jesus has done for you?
Where are you most tempted to define yourself by your struggles, failures, or old ways of living?
How might remembering that you have been joined to Christ change the way you approach that struggle today?
If you have never been baptized, what questions do you have about the gift God has given us in baptism?
Prayer
Father, thank You for the new life You have given me through Jesus. When I am discouraged by my failures or tempted to return to old ways of living, help me remember who I am because I belong to Christ. Thank You that Jesus’ death and resurrection have changed my story and my future. Teach me to walk in the new life You have given me and to trust You even when I do not understand everything You are doing. In Jesus’ name, amen.
