Growing Through Hard Seasons
"Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord's coming... You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near." — James 5:7–8
When life becomes difficult, our first instinct is usually to ask God to change our circumstances.
We pray for the diagnosis to improve, the relationship to heal, the financial pressure to ease, or the uncertainty to disappear. While those are good and honest prayers, James reminds us that God is often doing something even deeper than changing our situation—He is shaping us in the middle of it.
James writes to believers who were suffering. They were facing persecution, hardship, and uncertainty. Instead of promising immediate relief, he points them toward patient endurance. He uses the example of a farmer who faithfully works the fields while waiting for the harvest. The waiting isn't passive. It's filled with faithful obedience, trusting that God is at work even when the results can't yet be seen.
That same truth applies to us.
Waiting seasons are rarely wasted seasons. God is cultivating perseverance, strengthening our faith, and teaching us to depend on Him in ways comfort never could.
John Crosby pointed out that patience isn't simply gritting our teeth until life improves. Biblical patience grows out of remembering who God is and where He is. Jesus is Emmanuel—God with us. His presence isn't reserved for the easy days. He is just as present in the valley as He is on the mountaintop.
When we become aware of His presence, we begin to experience the fruit of His Spirit. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control aren't qualities we manufacture on our own. They are the character of Christ being formed within us as we remain close to Him.
That's why our daily habits matter so much.
The quiet moments of gratitude. Time spent in Scripture. Honest prayer. These aren't simply spiritual checklists—they're how we learn to recognize God's voice and His presence before the storms arrive. Then, when trials inevitably come, we aren't searching for a distant God. We're walking with the One who has been beside us all along.
Our circumstances may not change overnight.
But as we walk faithfully with Christ, He changes us.
And that kind of transformation is something the people around us can't help but notice.
Reflect
Where are you waiting on God right now?
Are you spending more energy trying to escape your circumstances than growing closer to Christ within them?
What simple practice could help you become more aware of God's presence each day?
Prayer
Father, thank You for never leaving me, even when life feels uncertain or overwhelming. Help me to trust that You are at work, even when I cannot yet see the harvest. Teach me to recognize Your presence in both the ordinary and the difficult moments. Grow Your character in me so that my life reflects Your love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control. Strengthen my faith to stand firm, knowing You are always with me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
